This quiet Midtown East brew hall is tucked away behind the more typical Cornerstone Tavern – if you have trouble finding your way, just look for the gigantic buck on the sign outside (its motto is “All American Craft Beer With the Deer”). The bar is a bit cozier than some of the more boisterous watering holes around town, making it perfect for some serious beer-breakdown discussion. You’re likely to find a lot of options that you’ve never tasted before, along with a showcase of excellent labels from local producers, including River Horse Brewery from New Jersey and New York’s Ommegang. If you’ve ever been parched while standing behind tourists at the Apple Store, you probably thought you were screwed. An oddly shaped, tight-squeeze bar in the round with plenty of restaurant seating and even a garden roof deck, The Stag’s Head always offers some adventurous selections on tap with a pretty nifty chalkboarded bottle list as well. Plus they host weekly tasting events with free thematic grub, because you just can’t sample Pittsburgh beers without a hearty portion of scrapple.

Xan Garcia, general manager of Stag’s Head, a dark-wooded lodge-style beer bar and gastropub specializing in exclusively American-made beer and spirits—and homey dishes braised in said beer—along Midtown East, is always looking for quality local tipples to join her queue of quaffs, and Tiedge’s gin was an easy addition. She says it brings out the subtle sugar in drinks like the bar’s aptly named Bee’s Knees: lemon juice, honey, mint and Comb 9 Gin. “You get a sweetness on the back end of the taste. The honey (in the gin) adds sweetness without making it cloying,” explains Garcia, emphasizing “it’s still a gin; it’s not like gin with a little honey mixed in.” Read the full feature
Word comes in today that Midtown East beer bar The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St nr 2nd Ave) will be celebrating Mardi Gras tomorrow evening with New Orleans food and beer pairings. They’ll be serving up some Fried Okra with Cajun Remoulade paired with Abita S.O.S., beer-poached shrimp & grits paired with the Abita Red, Seafood Beignets paired with the Golden Ale, Chicken Etoufee with Andygator and Oyster Po’ Boys served with Turbodog. They’ll also have Abita’s Black IPA on draft and possibly their Harvest Strawberry, too. The apps will range from $6-$10 and the main courses will both be around $15. This Wednesday, Midtown East beer temple The Stag’s Head will turn over the taps to Troeg’s Craft Brewery of Harrisburg, PA. The chef at Stag’s is actually from the same area as the brewery, so he thought it would be fitting to serve a local delicacy with the brew: scrapple. In case you’re not familiar with this yummy treat, it’s essentially pork scraps and trimmings mushed into a semi-solid loaf with cornmeal and flour yum! The dish is common in Pennsylvania Dutch country where it is known as “pon haus.”
Like rappers and clothiers, craft brewers love to collaborate. Sample the results of their teamwork when midtown pub the Stag’s Head taps six mash-up quaffs, including Super Friends IPA—a blend of suds from local favorites Ithaca, Brewery Ommegang, Captain Lawrence, Southampton and Flying Fish.
